Spaying & Neutering your Pet

What exactly is, "Spaying" and "Neutering"?
Both spaying and neutering are terms for surgical procedures used to stop pets from reproducing offspring.

  • In females, and ovario-hysterectomy is performed by your veterinarian who will surgically remove the uterus and ovaries.
  • In males, castration is performed by your veterinarian who will surgically remove the testicles.
  • Both procedures are done under general anesthetic after a thorough exam has been completed ot ensure your pet is healthy and ready for the surgery.

Does It Hurt?
Both surgeries are performed under a general anaesthetic therefore your pet will not encounter any pain during the procedure. BOth surgeries are commonly performed and present little to low risk to healthy pets. Recovery is usually quick and uneventful. Many veterinarians provide your pet with an injection that provides post-operative pain relief after surgery.

When Should It Be Done?
A common recommendation is around 6 to 7 months of age however many veterinarians now perform pediatric spay/neutering with great success. Ask your AVC health care team what is best for your pet!
